Parul Mishra originally from Gorakhpur in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India, is an accomplished exponent of the intricate art of Hindustani Classical music. Her first guru, Sri Prakash Pandey was not only her teacher but also her mentor. Although she was learning classical music, she was always drawn to semi-classical music (like dhamar, trivat, chaiti, kajari, tappa, tap-khyal, ashtapadis, thumri, dadra, ghazal and bhajan). Now, settled in Mumbai for professional reasons, she, nonetheless, has always been deeply connected to her traditional roots. As a twelve year old child, her family brought home a CD player and almost as destiny demanded it, a free CD containing Hindi folk songs by the doyen of folk music Ms Nirmala Devi. That serendipitous encounter had a deep impact on the young Parul’s mind and she found herself being irrevocably attracted to this genre of music. Tunes that she started humming from that time onwards have found their just culmination in this album.
